Don’t be foolish with your safety this spring. Take advantage of a series of personal protection workshops to learn the basic skills you need to keep yourself safe at SwingTime Ballroom.

Taught by Patricia Pearce, who has given classes in personal protection to everyone from Garrison Forest School to the Baltimore County Police Academy and Baltimore County Auxiliary Police (refined training; women’s division), these workshops are aimed primarily at women of all ages but men are also welcome. Students can take one class or the full series – discounts for enrolling in the five session series and for groups and families are available. The classes cover:

April 2: Introduction to Personal Protection.
Not knowing your options is not the same as not having any. This class will introduce you to those major skills that are needed to identify and avoid dangerous situations and/or assist you during a physical altercation. It will include helpful hints, and cover the importance of the stability and mobility concept.

April 9: Striking.
This class will cover body targeting with basic strikes, proper body alignment in using them to maximize their effectiveness on an attacker and help to minimize any damage to yourself.

April 16: Everyday Items.
You are never defenseless. Learn about the great equalizers that are constantly at your finger tips during your everyday activities. Any object can help assist you in your escape when it comes to protecting yourself against a larger more aggressive attacker.

April 23: Understanding Grabs & Locks.
Most women are attacked with a grab first. Learn the simple strategies of escaping grabs. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of various body locks.

April 30: Falling & Balance Manipulation.
Learn how to minimize your injuries from a fall by learning the best way to manipulate your body as you fall. Understand the rudiments of balance to enhance your stability and hamper your attacker’s mobility.

Classes meet on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Cost is $25 per class, $100 for the full five-week session prepaid; Student rates are $20 per class, $75 for the full session with current ID. Group and family discounts are available. Class size may be limited, so register early.
